Il genere dei picchiaduro ha da poco ottenuto una sua seconda giovinezza grazie ad alcune produzioni d’alto calibro, mobilitando schiere di estimatori pronte a darsele di santa ragione.

Dopo il poco fortunato tentativo di King of Fighters XII, SNK Playmore prova nuovamente a sfondare le difese del pubblico con la riproposizione in chiave next-generation di uno dei picchiaduro all’arma bianca più lungevi di sempre: Samurai Shodown. Il risultato? Colpo parato, brutale contrattacco e conseguente fatalità finale! Alla luce di ciò il recensore, reduce da numerose esperienze videoludiche poco fortunate e di scarso appeal, cosa dovrebbe mai tentare? Come per Samurai Shodown Sen, anch’egli sarà brutalmente sbattuto al terreno da quell’enorme esercito di mediocrità. Ferito nell’entusiasmo e nel raziocino, per trovare spiegazione a tale miseria e nella pazienza per cotanta situazione, egli si appresta ad analizzare l’ennesima insufficiente produzione. Proposto in un’aggiornata chiave 3D e in grafica ad alta risoluzione(?) degna della vecchia e cara prima Xbox, il roster di combattenti partorito dalle menti di SNK Playmore e cullato dalle sapienti (?) abilità dello sviluppatore Rising Star Games esplode in tutta la sua legnosa magnificenza sugli schermi degli sfortunati che, ahiloro, hanno buttato all’aria preziosi € 60 nella speranza di acquistare un qualsivoglia prodotto divertente.

Catapultati nel lontano 1791, epoca dominata da un rivoluzionario despota, riusciremo ad impedire le sue trame di bramoso potere per ristabilire la pace e l’equilibrio nel mondo? La risposta è un semplice e retorico, se ben chiari i concetti di cui sopra, no! Controlli infelici dall’altrettanto infelice timing di reazione impediscono di portare a termine il benché minimo fendente e di organizzare anche una primordiale strategia di difesa o contrattacco. In una tipologia di videogiochi dove l’essenza per una ottimale giocabilità sta nell’efficace risposta ai comandi impartiti, è inammissibile trovarsi tale le mani un titolo di simile fattura; in un campionario di combinazioni ridotte all’osso, è troppo pretendere una bilanciata risposta alle sequenze immesse sul caro gamepad? La teoria dovrebbe proporre una immediata esecuzione dei comandi, ma in questo caso possiamo tranquillamente, (sia chiaro) per assurdo, andare a prendere un gustoso espresso al vicino bar e tornare. A peggiorare la situazione interviene, inoltre, la gestione dei danni: immane la differenza tra produrre attacchi veloci ma deboli e lenti ma devastanti; basterà infatti un solo potente colpo ben assestato per mandare in fumo una impressionante serie di attacchi di inferiore intensità. Il gioco sembra anche tenere conto della posizione dalla quale viene effettuato l’attacco e dall’azione che ha portato a sferrarlo; un meccanismo intrigante, nelle intenzioni del team di sviluppo, se ben implementato, ma che in pratica regala ulteriore incertezza sull’efficacia dello stesso attacco durante il match: non si sarà mai in grado di valutarne la reale potenza.

Il fatto che Samurai Shodown Sen sia da oltre due anni sugli scaffali giapponesi (di qui la mediocrità della produzione se paragonata agli standard attuali) mitiga le nostre considerazioni. Ma se un barlume di pietà può paventarsi nella mente del recensore, esso viene immediatamente spazzato via dalla vista degli elementi "posticci" incollati tanto per riempire lo spazio nei fondali delle arene già rese riprovevoli da texture scure e poco dettagliate. Sul fronte sonoro le cose non vanno meglio: il buon campionario di musiche di sottofondo sarebbe  stato più adatto a Banjo & Kazooie che a un beat’em up.

Menù interamente disegnati a mano di buona fattura, facili da navigare.

Gameplay: 4
Controlli poco reattivi, inconsistenza degli attacchi e imprecisione nella gestione di danni minano fortemente l’esperienza di gioco.

Passi che il titolo ha praticamente due anni di vita ma, se lo paragoniamo a produzioni dello stesso periodo (leggi Virtua Fighter), non riusciamo a trovare un qualsiasi elemento degno di essere riprodotto su questa generazione di hardware.

Effetti sonori piatti e ripetitivi, colonna sonora non idonea al genere picchiaduro.

Longevità: 4
In pochi avranno la pazienza di "assaporare" fino in fondo l’ultima fatica di SNK Playmore a causa dei molteplici problemi tecnici.

Multiplayer: 4
Voi siete in grado di trovare avversari? Noi purtroppo non abbiamo avuto la fortuna di incontrare la benché minima traccia di essere senziente sui lidi di Xbox Live.
